As a Performance Improvement Specialist for UHSA, Mike Hughes brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role in helping clients improve and maximize performance, with not only clinical but also operational and financial outcomes.  Using comparative analysis, Mike will work with clients to identify both areas of superior performance and areas with opportunity for improvement, which can be invaluable as the industry moves towards P4P.

Work History:

Mike’s entire professional career has been in healthcare, both in the acute-care and home care environments.  With Respiratory Care as his clinical background, Mike started and managed Respiratory Care departments in facilities in both south Florida and northern Michigan.  For the past 14 years, he has focused exclusively in home health and Hospice, joining a northern Michigan home health and Hospice in 1993 and leaving in 1997 to join Patient Care Technologies in Atlanta, GA.

Experience:

With close to 40 years healthcare experience, Mike’s experience ranges through many areas.  In home health and Hospice, his duties have ranged from managing administrative services and medical records to responsibility for regulatory compliance and performance improvement activities. With the purchase of new clinical software in 1994, he served as Project Lead for implementation and training of PtCT’s computerized patient record.  Joining PtCT in 1997 as a clinical consultant, Mike worked with numerous clients on the more advanced features of the clinical software.  His 15 years in healthcare quality and performance experience lead him to PtCT’s benchmarking service, which he managed in all non-technical aspects for the past 7 years.  He has presented at NAHC and other conferences, with topics ranging from improving outcomes to computerized patient records.

Education:

A graduate of Miami-Dade Community College, Mike is a Registered Respiratory Therapist.  In 1992, he achieved and has maintained credentials as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) with the Healthcare Quality Certification Board. 

He maintains active membership in both the National Association (NAHQ) and Michigan Association for Healthcare Quality (MAHQ).
