Work history

Lois began her career as a working therapist 39 years ago, and developed her love of home health when she became the first physical therapist employed at a fledgling home health agency in 1972. While Lois also has experience in orthopedics and acute care, she has worked exclusively in home health since 1978. For the past seventeen years, Lois supervised physical and occupational therapists and speech pathologists at a home health agency in Washington state. Upon her appointment as the education coordinator for the agency, Lois discovered her passion for teaching and mentoring others which eventually led her to retire to devote herself fully to this.  She is currently an instructor for Boston University’s online doctoral program teaching Health Promotion and Wellness and Education Theory and Practice.

Experiences

As education coordinator for her agency, Lois developed teaching presentations for staff on both clinical and regulatory issues. Lois was instrumental in assisting staff to successfully transition to point-of-care computer documentation and a paperless charting system. She also co-chaired a utilization management project to teach staff to appropriately complete the OASIS assessment and then coordinate care within the limits of ever decreasing reimbursement. As a result of Lois’s efforts, the agency completely reversed its previous negative margin within the first quarter after her project began. For several years Lois served as chairman of the agency’s policy and procedure committee and was instrumental in steering the agency toward achieving an outstanding JCAHO rating with no deficiencies in 2002. In addition, Lois has positive experience in appealing Medicare denials and boasts a majority of denials reversed.

Education

Lois received her Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and her Master of Science in physical therapy and her Doctorate in physical therapy from Boston University in 1978 and 2005 respectively.
